cell phones made them pointless through the 90s/2000s, most carriers ripped them out by the 2010s. NYC actually removed its literal last public payphone in 2022, it's in a museum now.
Superman changing in a phone booth made way more sense back when these were just... everywhere on every corner.
a handful still exist in rural areas with no cell signal, so they're not 100% extinct, just extremely rare now.
