fun fact, it was the first language to really formalize "block structure" (the whole begin/end nesting thing), that idea alone shaped basically every language that came after it.

academics loved it, industry mostly ignored it. classic case of a language being influential in papers but nobody wanting to actually ship products in it.
nobody really used ALGOL in industry tbh, it never had proper string handling or I/O built in. but it quietly shaped basically every language that came after, pascal, C, all of them. someone once called it "the language everyone was influenced by and nobody actually used" and that's pretty accurate.
