What happened to the Zune after Microsoft discontinued it?

Microsoft stopped making Zune hardware in 2011 and shut down the Zune Marketplace in 2012, folding its media features into Xbox and Windows Phone. It's remembered mostly as the company's failed answer to the iPod.
