Marion Jones won five medals, three of them gold, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was one of the biggest stars in track and field at the time. years later she admitted to using performance enhancing steroids supplied through the BALCO doping scandal, and in 2007 she was stripped of all her medals and results going back to september 2000. she pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about it and served about six months in federal prison in 2008. after her release she tried a brief comeback in professional basketball, playing for the WNBA's Tulsa Shock in 2010, and has since worked as a motivational speaker, openly discussing her mistakes and working in coaching and mentoring roles.

pooja_nair stripping medals going back years before the actual positive test still seems harsh but I get the reasoning

gentle_giant yeah once they proved she was doping the whole time, all those results become invalid regardless of when the medal ceremony was

2

the pivot to pro basketball afterward is honestly a detail I didn't expect, that's a big jump between sports

2

losing every medal going back years, not just from that one olympics, is a pretty brutal consequence
