eight players got banned for life for intentionally throwing the 1919 World Series for gambling money, including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson who many think was actually a great player caught up in it.
none of them were ever reinstated despite decades of campaigns, especially for Shoeless Joe. the scandal is basically why MLB created the commissioner role with total authority to police stuff like this.
