it was found by French soldiers in 1799, then handed over to the British after they defeated Napoleon's forces in Egypt. it's been on display in the British Museum since 1802, though Egypt has repeatedly asked for it back.
it's actually only a fragment of a larger stele, the rest has never been found. its inscriptions being in three scripts is what let scholars finally crack Egyptian hieroglyphs.
