the whole english colony just disappeared between 1587-1590, the only clue was "CROATOAN" carved into a post. theories range from them assimilating with local tribes to disease/starvation to straight up conflict, nobody actually knows.
some archaeologists think artifacts found on nearby Hatteras Island support the "assimilated with the Croatoan tribe" theory more than people used to believe.
it's called "The Lost Colony" specifically because of this, there's even a long-running outdoor play about it performed every summer in North Carolina.
