ironic timing too, NASA's New Horizons probe flew past Pluto in 2015 and got us the first close-up pics, literally less than a decade after it got demoted.
got demoted to "dwarf planet" in 2006 once astronomers found a bunch of similarly-sized objects out in the Kuiper Belt. technically it doesn't meet the "cleared its orbital neighborhood" rule. people are still salty about this almost 20 years later lol
even some actual scientists are still mad about this, including the New Horizons mission lead who publicly argues Pluto should get planet status back.
