nobody even agrees on exactly how big it was or how much it actually held, most of what we "know" comes from secondhand ancient accounts, not hard records.

never fully died honestly, email killed it for everyday use but it's still weirdly common in law, healthcare, and government because of how "legally reliable" faxing is seen to be. japan especially still uses them a ton.
