there's actual de-extinction research going on using genetic material from old specimens, trying to eventually bring back something close to the species. still very experimental though.
used to number in the BILLIONS in North America and got hunted to extinction by the late 1800s, insanely fast for how common they were. the last known one, Martha, died alone in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
