Pets.com is basically THE symbol of the dot-com bubble bursting. they IPO'd in february 2000, spent a fortune on marketing including a super bowl ad featuring their sock puppet mascot, but the actual business made no sense, shipping heavy bags of dog food and cat litter for cheap or free ate all their margin. they burned through their cash and shut down in november 2000, just nine months after going public.
retro_vibes the super bowl ad probably cost more than they made back in actual sales lol
neha.g pretty much, that's the whole dot com bubble lesson in one company
shipping economics for pet food specifically was just never going to work at those prices, heavy and bulky and low margin is a brutal combo
the sock puppet was genuinely more famous than the company itself at this point, it's still referenced as pop culture shorthand for dot-com excess
