the impact crater (Chicxulub) is actually mostly underwater now, off the coast of Mexico, and took decades to even get properly identified as the impact site.
the Chicxulub asteroid hit 66 million years ago and basically nuked the food chain, wildfires, then a dust cloud blocking sunlight for years. wiped out every non-avian dinosaur. fun fact: birds are literally surviving dinosaurs, they just made it through.
